South Park Township Residents: Referendum to Add Two Additional Supervisors Has Been Approved

A petition was circulated to place a referendum on the November 5, 2024, ballot in South Park Township. This referendum proposes increasing the number of elected supervisors in South Park Township from three to five, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Second Class Township Code, Section 65402.

Why This Matters

Currently, South Park Township is governed by a board of three elected supervisors. As our community continues to grow and evolve, so do the complexities and demands of local governance.

Neighboring municipalities (many with a smaller population than South Park) have 5 to 9 elected representatives, several also have a mayor. This helps municipalities manage local affairs more efficiently and represent their residents more effectively.

Expanding the board to five supervisors aims to:

  1. Enhance Representation: More supervisors mean that a broader spectrum of the community can be represented, ensuring diverse interests and concerns are heard.
  2. Improve Governance: A larger board can leverage a wider range of perspectives and expertise, leading to more balanced and comprehensive decision-making.
  3. Distribute Workload: With more supervisors, responsibilities can be shared more effectively, allowing for more focused attention on specific areas of township management and services.

Understanding the Referendum Process

In Pennsylvania, the Second-Class Township Code provides the framework for townships like ours to adjust the composition of their governing bodies through public referendums. Section 65402 specifically allows residents to propose and vote on changes to the number of township supervisors. This process empowers the community to shape its local governance to better meet its needs.  If the petition is successful, a question will appear on the ballot as “Should two additional supervisors be elected to serve in this township? Y/N”

The petition was submitted to Allegheny County Elections Division officials for review. It was approved and the referendum will be placed on the November ballot, giving all registered voters the opportunity to decide on this critical issue.

By working together, we can position South Park Township to be governed in a way that best meets the needs of our growing and dynamic community. Thank you for your attention and support.
